The dog evolved from the gray wolf into more than 400 different breeds. Humans have played an important role in creating dogs that fulfill various social needs. Through an early form of genetic engineering, dogs were bred to emphasize instincts revealed by their early encounters with humans. Although the details of how dogs evolved are uncertain, the first dogs were hunters with keen senses of sight and smell. When the need or desire arose, humans developed these instincts and created new species.Dogs are viewed differently in different parts of the world. Loyalty, friendship, protection, and affection have earned dogs an important place in Western society, and dog breeding and feeding has become a multibillion-dollar business in the United States and Europe. Western civilization places great value on the relationship between humans and dogs, but, in some developing countries and many parts of Asia, dogs are not given the same respect. In some areas of the world, dogs are used as guards or beasts of burden or even for food, while in America and Europe dogs are protected and admired. Dogs were considered sacred in ancient Egypt during the time of the pharaohs.
